Maybe Now I’ll Ride My Bike More

Confession: my bike has been parked in the exact same spot since August 2010. It’s been locked to a rack outside the place I lived last year (not telling where, in case one of my many, wonderful readers knows how to break a ULock).

I’ve been extremely lazy and have left it there, in the EXACT same spot, for nearly 12 months now. Not that I don’t like biking–it’s very useful and handy sometimes, even enjoyable I bet. It’s just that it mostly scares me, because I’m not very good at it.

I feel like you need to be a very confident and aggressive biker to survive here in Minneapolis–named the best city for bikers in the US this year, it’s definitely not the for the faint of heart.

Also, I refuse to NOT wear a helmet when I ride because that’s just dumb. I spent a lot of tuition dollars investing in my noggin and I want to protect it when I’m wobbling down the street on my violet Huffy. However, I’m also extremely slighty vain and think I look so dorky in my helmet that I can’t bring myself to wear it in public. What does one wear with a helmet anyway? Romper? Jeans and a graphic tee? I can’t pull off the one-leg-rolled-up look like some. Not that all people look dumb on bikes, this is just my personal cross to bear.

So I won’t ridemy bike sans helmet+but I wont flaunt my helmet in public=I can only ride my bike indoors? This, coupled with the fact that MetroTransit in MSP is SO darn handy (slightly sarcastic), means I’ve neglected and avoided my bike for almost a year. I mean, I check on it from time to time to make sure it’s still there–it was, as of about 2 weeks ago. It’ll need new brakes, tires, hell reflectors too probably. Like I said, I’m avoiding it until I really need it (most likely never). Or find someone willing to buy it (takers? It’s cute, kinda).

BUT, that may change now that I discovered this little gem:

Yes, your eyes do not deceive! It is a bicycle mounted wine rack! GENIUS! The clever wino  behind this etsy shop may have given me the motivation to go unlock and *gasp* RIDE my bike for the first time in a year! Now I just need to dig out my helmet and find a suitable outfit… Romper that matches my helmet? Forever 21 anyone?

Dear Netflix, this is serious…

It’s become a fact of life that I spend much of my time on my computer/blackberry/internet in general. One of the reasons for this is because the internet is essentially infinite and I am a voracious learner/reader of all things. But also, because Netflix is so damn awesome. It has movies, TV shows, queues I can update and organize… basically endless hours of entertainment for a nerd/bored person like myself. Now, unless you live under a  rock you’ve probably heard my precious Netflix is raising its prices starting in September. Not by a lot in absolute terms, but an increase of almost 60% on some plans. Now this news was DEVASTATING when I learned of it a few days ago. My initial reaction went something like this:

HOW DARE YOU DO THIS TO ME?! This is a terrible injustice! It’s un-American! Practically against our Constitution! You’re going to try and wrench even MORE of my precious few dollars from my fun-employed, post-grad hands?! It’s not like I even really want to dvds by mail anyway. They take almost 2 days sometimes, which is a lifetime when I’m waiting on that next disc ya know. I’ll just take my “Friends” viewing business somewhere else if you want me to start actually paying for them by mail. It’s not like I really NEED to see half of the stuff on my queue, anyway! I only added it because I could and that damn little add button is so convenient. If you’re going to further GOUGE my pocketbook, can you at least get all my favorite things on STREAMING for Christ’s sake?! It’s really a travesty I have to wait for the House season 5 finale, and all of  Boston Legal and The West Wing.  If you ever pull Glee from streaming, we are REALLY done. And just when I’d learned how to pronounce “queue” correctly and found that 3 month old Avatar dvd in the snuggler… Doesn’t Blockbuster have a similar service now that they filed for chapter 11? Yeah, definitely looking into other services. TAKE THAT!

After my mild hissyfit panic attack, I started to read WHY my precious Netflix was doing this (licensing costs, efforts to have better offerings, attempting to cover costs better, etc). Although I was still thumping mad, I began to feel a little bad for my poor friend. I had been too quick to judge and too hasty to anger. I would simply downgrade my plan a little to fit my (nonexistent) budget and call it square. Started to become excited for what Netflix could begin to offer me instantly when I realized a bombshell:

SOUTH KOREA DOESN’T HAVE NETFLIX

My world stopped turning and I realized I wouldn’t have to worry about the price hikes anymore. I’d have to look into actually cancelling my account until I return to the US. And have to look into bootlegged copies of movies and other potentially illegal streaming sites (jk I’d never do that).

How much am I going to miss Netflix while I’m there?! SO MUCH! What will become of my preferences and suggestions! A whole new travesty emerged.

In order to try and preserve my meticulously maintained queue and preferences, I wanted to copy and save them somewhere (why not my public online journal of sorts, eh?)

They’re actually pretty funny and scarily accurate! So here are my “taste created preferences” row descriptors from my Netflix home, in their entirety:

Romantic Showbiz Dramas
LOGO Gay & Lesbian TV Shows
Emotional Biographical Gay and Lesbian
Inspiring Underdog Movies based on real life
Feel-good Magical Children & Family Movies
Witty British TV Shows
Critically-acclaimed Crime Movies based on a book
Exciting Conspiracy TV Shows
Nature & Ecology TV Documentaries
Business Social & Cultural Documentaries
Mind-bending Independent Mysteries
Steamy Foreign Movies Featuring a Strong Female Lead
Gritty Thrillers based on contemporary literature
Violent Suspenseful Drug Movies

Reading these, I’m slightly worried everyone is going to think I’m a strong feministic lesbian brit-hipster with CSI ambitions and a chip on her shoulder. I’m none of the above, I promise (half-kidding)

I just have spastic varied interests and spend way too much time watching Netflix… while I still can…

Chez Moi

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to use these anytime soon as it’ll be several years before I have even a semi-permanent residence…. BUT these are a few ideas I’ve been drooling over lately! They look so simple and adorable, it almost makes me want to settle down now. ALMOST.

Best idea for an accent wall I’ve seen yet (oh and the GORGEOUS chandelier ain’t bad either):

(source)

In another room, probably my (dream) office, I’d make this idea a reality. Put the world at my fingertips 🙂

Finally, my foyer would feature these rustic (and useful) touches!

FINALLY, this would be my dream roommate:

Guess I’ll have to keep dreaming and collecting ideas until I can actually make them a reality!

DIY Necklace: UPDATE

You may remember back in March, when I wrote about a super cute DIY necklace! I found the idea on PS I made this and it looked like this:

Well I got around to doing-it-myself finally this afternoon!

My attempt/interpretation was not so adorable, unfortunately. In fact, it looked a little gaudy to me. I was using a few long strands of costumes pearls and a lonely broach from my jewelry collection just like they pictured, but it just wasn’t working. (No offense to the PS version, I sucked at recreating their cute work!)

As I was pranced around my room wearing it and trying it on with clothes, I really couldn’t see myself wearing it for real. And that was kinda the point. To remake/redesign my pearl strands so I’d actually wear them.

So, I decided to try something different. I modified the design a tish and LOVED the results.

I had noticed the strands kept twisting up as I was working with them. Annoyed before, I had kept trying to untwist them. But (post-DIY-fail) when I was experimenting, I gave in and let them curl into each other. The result was pretty cute! With some tweaking and prodding, I was impressed with what it looked like!

Even more exciting, I ended up with two necklaces! The lengths were uneven so they worked better as two separate pieces! One is a plain pearl curl and the other has my broach as a garnish, is a little more flashy.

(I was focusing on getting good pics of the necklaces with my crappy webcam so I’m making weird faces, don’t judge)

I’m really excited about these new pieces! Can’t wait to find the perfect outfit to debut them with!

What do you think?

Great (F) Scott!

My unhealthy deep love and adoration for F. Scott Fitzgerald is no secret. I love his writing, anecdotes, and reading about his fascinating life.

I was first made aware of his genius in my high school AP American Lit class (shoutout to Mr. Costello and MHS). I had no interest in literature, interpretation, or active reading prior to this class. I would read for fun but never really engage the material. Quite honestly, I didn’t know how. But thanks to a scary great teacher and classic novels, a small seed of appreciation for literature was planted in me.

Today, it has grown tremendously. I’ve started to read and *gasp* attempt to understand books on my own (with the help of the internetz)

Fitzgerald really was a wizard and he’s still one of my favorite authors to read. And re-read.

I’ve developed a slight obsession with all things not only Fitzgerald, but Gatsby-related over the years. It’s easily my favorite book (HP takes spots 2-8, obvi). I’ve read it countless times and can never seem to get enough. One of my best friends just confessed to me that she’s never actually read the book, so I can’t wait to make encourage her to read it!

My obsession never gets the chance to wane as new ties to the story pop up everyday: the film (by my FAVORITE director, Baz, no less), a red wine with its namesake (anyone in FL or NY want to field a shipment for me?!), even the tragic demolition of the Gatsby mansion inspiration (if only I had a couple Gs in the bank).

I can read about him/his work for hours but lucky for me, I can even experience a bit of his life for myself! It’s a strange coincidence that Fitzgerald was born and raised in none other than St. Paul, MN. How lucky that I just so happen to live in the same state, let alone AREA as one of my idols?! Pretty damn lucky.

I’ve been wanting to visit some of the historic Fitzgerald sites since I moved to Minneapolis. Being that he lived here for many years, there’s much to see! My favorite internet discovery from the past few years is the “Fitzgerald Walking Tour.” What a genius idea?! People have mapped out where Fitzgerald lived and hung out and made a handy guide for stalkers enthusiasts like myself! There are a couple I’ve ran across but these two are the best:

On Friday, I am planning to go with a couple of friends and follow in Fitzgerald’s footsteps! Camera and maps in hand, I can’t wait to visit his old haunts and mingle with the places that cultivated his genius! I have goose-bumps already!

I hope to cap off my tours with a stop at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Reading Alcove at the Central Library. What a beautiful tribute! And you can bet I’ll have a copy of Gatsby in my bag.

Oh and did I mention that there is a similar tour out in California featuring the setting for Fitzgerald’s post-MN life?? My wallet is cringing as I search Kayak for flights…

“To write it, it took three months; to conceive it three minutes; to collect the data in it all my life.”

Application Headaches

Let me preface this post by saying that I am so lucky to have the chance to go abroad and get paid to teach and live in another country.

That being said, it is SO much work to get everything in order! I don’t have a passport (i know, i know) so that’s the first hurdle. Then I have to get more fingerprints taken to submit with my fbi background check (with apostille certifications). Next, request and send copies of my diploma, transcripts, birth certificate, social security card, and drivers license. Then apply for my visa–the application is in MANDARIN. Hello? Translator please. They have limited English translations and I’m utterly lost.

Next I have to complete my TEFL certification classes and buy my plane tickets.

And did I mention all of these things cost money? Real life American dollars. A small fortune to be exact.

I swear they are like testing me to see how bad I want to do this. “Pretty damn bad” is the answer. So I’m not gonna give up anytime soon. I just wish it didn’t require me to fill out mounds of paperwork and spend hours on government websites!

But I did kinda get the opportunity/opportunities of a lifetime, so I’ll complain quietly to myself until my plane takes off and I leave for Asia!

Epitome of Organization

This closet is absolutely TO DIE FOR. I may have found my next what-the-hell-do-I-do-with-myself-now hobby.

The color coordination and all the little boxes and shelves make me want to go nuts at Office Max….

Too bad this is a little girl’s closet (I’m pretty sure). I wonder what it would look like re-vamped for a 22-year-old woman?! 😉
